Rexona Takes Music Powered Run to The Next Level

On October 26, immerse yourself in a trail of pulsating beats and scintillating visuals that will push you to go further into running euphoria at one of the most sought-after runs in the calendar, the Rexona Run To Your Beat 2014.

Taking Rexona’s Do More philosophy to the next level, Rexona Run To Your Beat 2014 will once again challenge you to stretch your limits at a music powered run that pushes you further while you stay fresh. Mar Corazo, Rexona Brand Manager, says, “We are always finding ways to make the Rexona Run more exciting than the last. This year, we wanted to take the Do More philosophy into higher gear with stimulating visuals to match music from different genres, as interpreted by some of Manila’s top DJs.”

This year, Rexona has chosen to collaborate with the Republiq group and the top DJs in the Philippines to fuel your run with live music. Pushing runners to the finish line will be DJs Ace Ramos, Mars Miranda, Deuce Manila, Martin Pulgar, Euric, Motherbasss, and MC Pao

To make things even more exciting, Rexona introduces three new tunnels with varying themes that will make the music come to life. At key points during the race, runners will be able to experience the Retro, HipHop and EDM themed tunnels that will have different features, from roller bladders to disco balls, street art to laser light. But of course, only those who can do more can enjoy all three tunnels. 5K and 10k runners will go through two tunnels, while 21k runners will be able to experience all three!

Gun start for 5k is 3:45 AM, 10k 3:30 AM and 21k 3:00 AM. Interested runners can register online at www.runrio.com/rexonarun starting September 8, today, until October 12, 2014. In-store registration will also be available in Toby’s MOA, RUNNR Store or Move in Bonifacio High Street, Toby’s SM North EDSA, The Block and Toby’s Robinsons Galleria starting Friday, September 12 until October 19.

To prepare individuals for this much-awaited run, Rexona will be holding running clinics from
September 16 – October 23. Led by Coach Rio, in collaboration with 360 Club Fitness, the clinics will be twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6-9PM at the Fort. The clinic is open to all interested individuals, but priority will be given to those who have registered for the Rexona Run 2014. Sign up for the Rexona Run running clinics now at the Training Camp tab on the Rexona Facebook page.

Rexona Run 2013: We Ran to the Beat!

Fireworks.
Neon Tunnel.
Non-stop music.

Rexona Run's 2013 outing is probably one of the year's best 21k race events I've joined in, up there on my top three. Logistically difficult to stage but they delivered it amid some minor flaws which you could just easily ignore after experiencing the race.

October 17 to 19: Race Kit Claiming
SM Mall of Asia's Music Hall again became the venue of the race kit claiming. There was a bit of miscommunication on the claiming dates, with October 16 initially announced and stamped on registration forms but was moved a day later. Good thing I was checking Rexona's official FB page regularly so I was updated. Picked up my kit as well as my other blogger friends' - CJ Run Adobo King, Thirdy Lopez, Rolly Speedy Titan, Allan Running Free Manila and Jet Paiso.

Race Kit Claiming at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall
Bloggers' kits on hand! I'm runner 0183.
October 20 - Race Day
This is probably the earliest gun start for a 21k race - 3AM! An early morning race with a night concert feel. I was at the venue 1:30am, paranoid of losing a parking slot, as I am anticipating a sold-out event means only one thing - lots of people! I had spare time then to go around and take photos of the event set-up. The lights and sounds really build up the excitement!

Party feel everywhere
Got back to my car as fellow bloggers will get their kits from me. We took a quick snap then headed out to the assembly area.

From L-R: Allan, CJ, Rolly, Jet and me
Rolly and I plan to be on race mode so we squeezed our way in front of the pack, as we bumped into JP and Jaycee during race briefing. The usual video of the race route was shown, and then the 10-second countdown to gun start. Then a series of events came to unfold - the emcees shouting the band Sandwich performing "Sugod" and with the first steps of the 21k runners, a fireworks display accompanied the adrenaline rush-filled music. You could definitely feel the excitement of everyone. What a way to start the race!

The biggest surprise for me is the neon tunnel - this was something everyone was raving about after the race. I wish there was more (though I knew that setup was way too expensive). The lights and the music inside were insane! You would forget for a moment that you are in a race. Definitely a race innovation worth commending!

The most talked-about neon tunnel!
And now to my race notes:
- Abundant ice-cold hydration and Gatorade
- Surprised there were no bananas along the 21k route, which everyone is used to on a Runrio race
- Speakers (or DJ stations) were well-placed and well-distanced from each other but my only complaint is that the songs being played were the same! With a plethora of running music choices, it was a bit disappointing why they had a limited playlist.
- Gun start of 10k was 3:30am and the 5k runners at 3:45am. Merging of all distance categories was a bit of a disaster for me, as I was targeting to finish a sub-2. It was soooo difficult to overtake a lot of walkers along the route. Some even stopping abruptly, taking photos with friends along the road, and walkers lining up making it difficult to find space to pass through.
- Great design for the finisher medal and the finisher shirt for 21k runners. Love the loot as well.

I still managed to do a decent 2:02 finish and just shrugged off my disappointment of not meeting my target. The race was all about fun anyway and did I have fun!

Post-race is again time to meet and catch-up with runner friends and just hang-out. We stayed at the race village until sunrise.

If you missed the fun, the below video SDE would pump you up and make you wish you were there! Kudos to Rexona and Runrio for upping the ante of a "fun run". We're all looking forward to what Rexona Run 2014 is going to offer next.

Rexona Run To Your Beat

From the gun start to the finish line, this year’s Rexona Run promises to push running enthusiasts, professional runners and recreational runners to DO:MORE.

Mar Corazo, Rexona Brand Manager says, “We are always finding ways to make the Rexona Run more exciting than the last. This year, we wanted the Rexona Run to appeal to more people and inspire them to Do:More.”

As one of the most sought after races in the Philippines, runners look forward to the Rexona Run every year for its exciting twists, prizes and categories.

On October 20, 2013 at the Mall of Asia Grounds, be prepared for a different kind of race—the Rexona Run To Your Beat, the Philippines’ first ever multi-sensorial after-midnight run where live music pushes people to run further and culminates in a party at the finish line.

“This was inspired by the insight that when you run to the beat of the music, you run faster, you go further, you’re energized to do more,” said the Rexona Brand Manager.

From the first gun start at 3AM, live performances will be scattered around the race track, adding a very different take on running. The 5k race will have performances by Delta Street, Sandwich, The Diegos, DJ Mia Ayesa, Deuce Manila and DJ Nina.  The 10k race will get the chance to run to Funk Avy and DJ Khai.  While the 21k race will see all performances, as well as the finale concert of Rico Blanco, Elmo Magalona and DJ Mars Miranda.

Coach Rio, Rexona partner and running expert says, “It’s been proven that listening to music unleashes your energy, allowing you to run further.”

In line with Rexona’s DO: MORE philosophy, Run to Your Beat presents the perfect avenue for all individuals to DO:MORE – whether you’re an avid runner or leisure runner.

Run to Your Beat is also the ultimate test of Rexona’s efficacy because the product keeps you dry and fresh from the start of the race until the end of the party.

To register, visit Riovana stores located in Bonifacio Global City and Katipunan, as well as Tobys outlets in the SM Mall of Asia and SM North Edsa The Block. Online registrations are also accepted on www.runrio.com. Registration is ongoing until October 13, 2013.

Rexona Run 2012: I Got Keychain!

Just a week after my Afroman distance run at RU3, it's now time for another 21k run at Rexona Run 2012. This year's edition challenges runners to DEFY, SURPASS and OUTRUN themselves, by giving runners a special token if they do a sub-2 21k or a sub-30 5k.

Another promising addition to this year's race is having pacers for varying finish time targets, to push runners to their limits. The day before the race, I was seriously contemplating if I'm going to target a new 21k PR (meaning I have to join the sub 1:50 pacer, Mark Terrado) or just join my running teammate from Team Alpha 1 FFS, who's doing a sub-1:55 pace. I chose the latter, which I eventually regretted, as it required a 5:14 min/km pace. I only managed to follow this fast pace until KM6; I was too burnt-out.

The Rexona 21k race map
I slowed down and did my normal pace, but I was having irritating thoughts of doing a DNF. I shrugged them off. Calculating my new pace, I knew FFS will catch up with me within the final 7 kilometers of the race (I'd at least manage to finish sub-1:55 if I could just sustain his pace). I tried to follow his lead when he passed by in the long stretch of Macapagal, at least for a kilometer or two. I needed to walk on hydration stations as I was splashing myself with water to cool me down. And with that, I was again left by another pacer.

Thanks Running Photographers for this pic!
At the final 2 kilometers, I saw a familiar runner - my friend from Team Titans Rolly. I handed him ice cubes I got from the last hydration station (holding on to ice cubes while running has a mental effect on my running performance, btw) and we paced until the finish line.

Speedy Titan and me
We clocked in at 1 hour, 57 minutes and 24 seconds - a 21k PR for Rolly and my fastest 21k this 2012! I joined the Team Titans group stretching at the Mall of Asia grounds.

21k finishers
Some race observations:
+ I liked the race route - it's perfect to do a sub-2 on it.
+ Overflowing hydration - water, Powerade. There were hydration stations with mini-water bottles. They were easy to carry while running.
+ Lots of sponges.
+ Lots of bananas.
+ Large trash bins for hydration cups
+ Minimal runner congestion and merging of different categories. I felt like most of the time I was running just with 21k runners.
+ Great-looking finisher medal!
+ Everyone's happy with the (grocery) loot bag!
- The only improvement area in my opinion is on the pacers. They were literally invisible with the shirts that were provided for them. It would have been better if they have different colored shirts which stood out from the sea of blue runners. Or at least a balloon (which is used even for international races).

Photo with my runner idol - Sir Patrick "Runningshield" Concepcion
OFFICIAL RACE RESULTS: Chip time at 1:57:20. I ranked 217th out of 2810 21k Runners (Top 7.7%). WOOT!

Fastest KM: KM4 at 5:06 / Slowest KM: KM11 at 5:56
Finishing sub-2, I got the special token! I got keychain!

21k medal and my special token
Another well-organized race from Rexona and Runrio! I wonder what the next challenge will be on Rexona Run 2013.

UPDATE (August 9, 2012)
OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF POSTPONEMENT FROM RUNRIO
**************************************

Dear Runners,

Due to the heavy rains, we will be postponing the REXONA RUN 2012 event to SEPTEMBER 23, Sunday still at the Mall of Asia grounds. We feel that due to the current calamity, it would be inappropriate to still push through with the event. We have taken into consideration that a lot of the runners may be living in affected areas, and that our route marshals are part of the AFP so th ey will be busy with relief operations.

Instead, we will be focusing our efforts on relief operations this weekend, particularly in Marikina. You are very much welcome to participate or help out in any way. More details will be posted soon.

Thank you for understanding. Please stay safe and dry!

Coach Rio
