Takbo.ph Runfest 2013: The [Up]hills are Alive!

During my review of this year's NatGeo Earth Day Run, I have noted its challenging race route as it utilized Bayani Road and its inclines. However, all that seemed easy as compared to the just recently concluded Takbo.ph Runfest. Most of the time, I found myself gasping for air as it feels majority of the route is an uphill path. As soon as you hit a downhill, you'll make a sudden U-turn to another grueling incline. Something I found unique on the 21km route is its use of two flyovers - the usual Buendia Flyover during the first part, and the C5 Flyover (near Market! Market!) which is something new to runners.

It sounds as if I'm ranting but I'm not. I definitely liked the challenge of the new race route.

Flashback to 3:30am: With the aid of the detailed announcement at the Takbo.ph FB page on parking, I was able to secure a slot on the 34th street parking lot, which was the nearest one on the starting line. I did my usual pre-race routine - apply Bodivance on my shoulders and legs, do a few dynamic warm-up exercises, take a pee break, and then consume a pack of GU Roctane. I was at the assembly area a few minutes past 4am, and 21k runners were greeted by the ever-hyper event host Bearwin Meily (Runtarantantan).

Que Gavan led a short prayer, followed by Jinoe's Takbo.ph anniversary speech. When Jinoe mentioned the event marshals wearing the very striking orange top, I just knew a number of them would be familiar faces in the running community, willing to give back by volunteering.

After the warm-up exercises, the countdown to gun start commenced. 21k runners were sent-off on the dot, 4:30am. I noticed there were no timing device detectors at the starting line so this only means everyone's result will be based on gun time. I didn't mind since I was near the front of the pack. Hehe!

During the first 4 kilometers, my legs felt like lead. They were so heavy and I was blaming the squats that I did last Wednesday (I don't usually do squats while lifting a heavy bar but I did that as part of my Wednesday workout). I didn't expect recovery would take that long. Fortunately, I got my groove back post-KM4 when my legs were all warmed-up and ready to race.

Here are my positive observations on the race:

- On-time gun start

- The challenging route - especially the C5 Flyover with a very killer incline!

- Marshals are also runners. So they understand the right cheers and encouragement that their fellow runners need. A lot were courteous and keeps on greeting runners "Good morning!" with a smile (I reply back of course). Special mention is Racs Salcedo - at around KM15, he was handling the vehicular traffic very well and prioritized runners as soon as they approached the busy intersection. I also saw Rikki Suarez (Cheapanggang Diva) on a bike and Rikki cheered me on and pushed me to run amidst my tired look. Haha!

- Hydration is ok. There were Pocari Sweat stations as well (which were separate), so I assume there were no runners who mistakenly poured themselves with Pocari. Lol! There were bananas as well for 21k runners.

- There were "shower stations" along the race route, where runners could pass through and cool down. I skipped this one as I was afraid to have my shoes and socks wet (and get blisters). 

- Photo-Ops covered the event so of course, quality pictures for everyone's enjoyment.

- Organized loot bag and finisher shirt claiming post-race.

- Contrary to some feedback I've read on the 21k medal, I liked it amidst its small size. I guess some runners have just been spoiled too much. I liked the simplicity of it.

For improvement:

- Poor lighting at 8th avenue and Buendia flyover, which was very prone to runner accidents. There were parts when the lights were directly facing the runners and already blinding. Lights should have been positioned at a lower angle to only light up the roads instead. Good thing on my way back to BGC, the sun was already starting to rise so better visibility.

- At the 8th avenue / Kalayaan intersection U-turn, marshals were not prepared to give away the U-turn cords. They were overwhelmed by the sheer number of runners approaching and then had to fall in line just to get a cord. It didn't help that this area was very dark too at that time.

Overall, a very organized race by Lead Pack! And for Runfest's first attempt to stage a 21km category, they did a very excellent job. Kudos to Lead Pack, Jinoe and Que Gavan, and to all the marshals and volunteers!

More of an outdoor adventure that will test one’s personal best and endurance, race warriors and active sports enthusiasts are invited to come and prepare themselves to outlast the rigors of the road this July 28, 2013 for the TEVA Trail Challenge.

adidas KOTR 2013: A Roller-Coaster Ride!

It's been almost a week since the adidas King of the Road 2013 race. My blog title says it all: the race experience has been one hell of a roller-coaster ride. Excitement, disappointment, race event highs, race kit claiming lows. My biggest pitfall is that with the big brand, I had very high expectations, not to mention it's already the event's fifth year (from what I know, KOTR started 2009). In that time span, registration fee increased from 2009's P500 for the 21k category to this year's P1300 for the 16.8k category. With the increased fees, it follows that everyone would expect improving services from the organizer.

Registration Period:

During the registration period, which started way back May 2, registered participants were informed that race kit claiming will be from July 1 to July 6, on selected adidas stores. Singlet sizes were available on registration sites, which is a good thing. The official adidas KOTR site indicated that the singlet color will be on a first-come-first-served basis, so it's quite implied that most participants would get the correct size but not their preferred color, which is supposedly fine. It was also clearly stated on the site that singlets are of European sizes, and with our Filipino built, it's quite obvious demand for smaller sizes will be higher (and that perhaps the race organizer would order more of the smaller sizes). I selected XS when I signed-up. I promised myself I'll be one of the first people to claim come July 1.

Race Kit Claiming Disaster: 

Fast forward to June 28 (Friday): I got an SMS from PROACTIVE, saying there will be an early race kit claiming on June 29 and 30 at BGC. Uh-oh! A short notice announcement. I quite panicked. I knew this was a disaster brewing come the supposed first day of claiming. I had weekend plans as well so I had no time to insert claiming on my schedule. I have to wait until Monday.

June 30, Sunday night, I was already getting news of the lack of smaller sizes, particularly the XS size, after the mass kit claiming of big running teams/groups. I was still hoping though that new stocks will be replenished on adidas stores the following day for the regular kit claiming.

July 1, woke up early and went to adidas BGC. A long line greeted me upon my arrival. I wonder what's causing the hold up and saw only a couple of personnel manning the claiming booth. People claiming were also being allowed to fit the race singlet. WHY!?!

Unfortunately, 30 minutes later upon approaching the claiming staff, I was informed that XS is no longer available, the smallest size that they have is S, and that is only for the infrared color. Smallest size for the yellow and the blue singlets is M. I was so pissed-off, but controlled my temper to argue with the staff. I settled for what was available. Do I have any choice? I ranted instead on my FB account.

After reading my FB post, Noelle De Guzman (Kikay Runner), coordinated with a contact from PROACTIVE to shed some light on the lack of stocks of smaller singlet sizes. It seems that the cause of the mishap points back to the weekend claiming: size swapping was allowed! PROACTIVE should have at least provided the sizes runners originally registered for, waited for the majority to finish claiming, and only allowed swapping on the last few days of claiming.

Reading on social media sites and forums, it was one of the worst race kit claiming ever:
- A friend of mine who registered online, got her kit delivered to her home address. You would think with the additional delivery cost, it would be hassle-free but no! She got a singlet for men.
- Read in a forum of runners who did online registration and got the wrong singlet sizes delivered to them.
- Saw a pic in Twitter of a person who waited 7 hours just to get his race kit.
- Saw another pic in Twitter of a long queue in BGC Trinoma. I remember while I was claiming, staff in BGC informed me not to even attempt going to Trinoma as it was already chaotic there.
- Pinoyfitness post on KOTR garnered one of the highest comments ever (of rants and hate and pandemonium)!

July 2, Tuesday morning, another SMS from PROACTIVE arrived. Race kit claiming on the adidas stores were closed and again centralized in BGC. Another short notice announcement, which I'm sure did not reach all runners. The SMS simply mentioned they wanted "to improve their services". There was not even a hint of apology for the hassles they have caused.

I dropped my expectations on race day significantly.

[On a lighter note, I had my singlet altered at Alter Station Glorietta.]

Race Day:

A complete 180 degree turn of events, race day is as perfect as it could be. It had all the elements of a perfect race event (using the winning formula of Runrio races):
- Organized pre-race program
- Well-planned race route and visible race markers
- Lots of security and marshals and medical aid
- Photographers everywhere!
- Great hydration
- Organized loot bag claiming
- A finisher medal like no other (this is c/o adidas and not the local organizer, I would presume)

All these and a bonus of race groups cheering along the way! It was festive and fun. (The weather even cooperated too!)

I really hope for improvement on 2014's KOTR, especially on the race kit claiming part. I'd like to quote a friend who posted a comment on my FB account. Here's what he had to say:

"FOR ME, the race experience starts during the registration process and also includes the waiting game and the claiming process, plus the organization of runners after they have crossed the finish line."

Cobra Ironman 70.3 and Alaska Ironkids Return to Cebu

The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines returns to Cebu, the country's number one tourist destination, as the province hosts its fifth edition as well as the Alaska Ironkids Triathlon on August 3 - 4, 2013.

Already in its fifth year the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 has become the biggest and best Ironman 70.3 race in this part of the world with over 2,000 participants from 35 countries across six continents. All slots for the race were sold out four days after they were offered to the public and more than 600 individuals are on the waiting list.

The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines starts with the 1.2-mile swim in open water at the beach of the Shangri-La's Mactan Resort & Spa in Mactan Island on August 4.

Leading the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines are the professional triathletes notably three-time champion Pete Jacobs of Australia.

Jacobs is a regular fixture of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines. He will gun for a fourth consecutive victory after winning the past three editions in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

He will have his hands full against Cameron Brown of New Zealand and Alaska Team TBB's Mathieu O'Halloran who placed second and third in the 2012 race. Other male professionals to watch out for include Ben Allen Australia, Fredrik Cronberg of Sweden and Michael Murphy of Ireland.

Defending women's champion Caroline Steffen of Alaska Team TBB returns to defend her crown. Her strongest challenge will come from 2011 champion and 2012 third placer Belinda Granger who is fresh from her triumph at the Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon in Subic last June.

Expected to compete for the crown are Bree Wee from the United States (who placed second last year), Alaska Team TBB's Christie Sym, and Jacqui Slack of Great Britain.

The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines is a qualifier for the IronMan World Championships Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada on September 8.

I was so excited to be invited to the media launch of this highly-anticipated sports event which was held at Makati Shangri-La Hotel. It's one of the biggest launches I've been to. I'm no triathlete, but it was a similar environment feel (yet in a more elite sort of way). When I saw the finisher medal, I got this sudden urge of becoming an Ironman someday.
