Race and explore in Run BGC 2012

Run BGC, Bonifacio Global City’s (BGC) annual running event, is all set to make footrace buffs challenge themselves anew in a race to cross BGC’s epic finish line.

This year’s Run BGC has four categories, offered with male and female classifications: 500m Kiddie Race, 5K Special Route with Fun Tasks, 10K, and 15K. The race for children is sub-divided into 5-8 years old and 9-12 years old categories.

In a race dubbed, “Ready, Set, Explore!”, runners will enjoy a route that will take them to explore some of BGC’s top attractions – like the interactive parks, playfield, and The Mind Museum. Making it more memorable are the fun challenges along the way. The 5K category has this “explore” route with pit stops that require runners to complete various tasks required to finish the race.

Cash prizes, trophies, exciting premium product packs, and gift certificates await the top three placers of each category. All race finishers will receive a loaded finisher’s kit and the competition’s biggest contingent will get a special award.

But more than that, all finishers, in all distance categories, will qualify to join a raffle draw with a grand prize of Asian cruise for 2 persons courtesy of High Street South. The cruise will take the lucky BGC runner to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia via Singapore before heading to Phuket, Thailand, then back to Singapore. Prize is convertible to P150, 000.00 cash but non-transferable.

RUPM: A Red Carpet Finish

Registration to the Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM) is now officially closed! I wasn't able to attend the media and bloggers' briefing event last October 23, but while the event was ongoing, I was reading tweets and posts from my blogger friends - they were all excited on what's in store especially for the full marathon finishers. Since I'm running 42k, I can't help but feel the same. Below images are previews of Unilab and Runrio's grand plan for RUPM:

See you on October 28! Can't wait to cross that finish line and be given that royal treatment full marathon runners have been dreaming of.

Certified Urbanathlete!

With two weeks to go before my next full marathon at RUPM, I did something crazy - I joined the half-marathon category of the Men's Health Urbanathlon, risking potential injury as this is no ordinary road race. The race organizers promised more challenging obstacles along the route this year and woah, they did deliver! I'm a proud survivor (yes, I'm wearing my Survivor buff) and now a certified urbanathlete!

Some race observations:
- Race started on time and there were just enough runners per category (which is a good thing since the organizers had to control the number of participants or there'd be disaster queues on obstacles)
- Hydration was ok. I like certain hydration stations wherein marshals were arranging used cups in piles. Runners passing by were then just putting their used cups on top of these piles - a simple idea which triggered a bit of discipline on runners.
- Early in the race, there was one hydration station which had no water to offer already. Later in the race, I passed by a hydration station where runners had to drink on the container lids since they ran out of cups.
- There were directional signs but no kilometer markers (I don't remember seeing one).
- There were lots of turns and u-turns along the route, but hey I'm not complaining! This is MHU!
- Tires obstacle was initially planned but never materialized on the actual race. I was looking forward to that; it seems fun!
- 21k route seems short by 200 to 300 meters.
- Distribution of finishers' items was organized.
- Medals were the same for all categories. I would have preferred the distance inked or engraved on the finisher medals. Surviving 21k with obstacles is no joke. But there were dog tags exclusively for 21k finishers so I'm happy!
- The best part: photographers everywhere! Thanks to the Running Photographers group!

And with that, I can now share my MHU experience through these photos:

1. STAIRS - after a kilometer warm-up run, our quads were given the stairs treatment.
2. 12-FT CONTAINER VAN - I had some bruises on my knees climbing this part.
3. PARALLEL BARS + MODIFIED MONKEY BARS - It's the test to carry your own body weight.
4. STEEPLE CHASE - Midway through the race, it's time to jump on a number of bars. Took it easy here as forced impact might injure me.
5. MILITARY HURDLES - This was located 2 kilometers away from the finish line. Quite a long queue. I witnessed a number of runners cheating on this part, passing below the hurdles. Oh well.
6. SCAFFOLDING MAZE - Up and under, up and under, on these metal bars.
7. Lastly, the dreaded WALL CLIMB - Loooooong queue here!  I waited for about 20 minutes before my turn. And then it was a few meters of running to the finish!
Almost at the finish - with the MOA Eye in the background
Urbanathlete approaching the finish line!
Me and Arvin - I paced him in the first half of the race
Me and Team Alpha1 teammates Bryan and Romp
MHU Performance - Finished in 2:29! Negative split! Long queue at wall climb affected KM21 time.
The Men's Health Urbanathlon dog tag
Looking forward to next year's MHU!

CIHM FOR DUMMIES
 ************************************
Q: Is the Php2700 (regular rate too expensive for a race in the Philippines?
A: Not so. Relative to the ever increasing registration fees of races in Metro Manila, the participation fee in CIHM is actually very reasonable, and almost a steal. Sun Cruise’s regular rate per person for a daytrip to Corregidor that includes round-trip ferry, a group-guided tour of the island, and a lunch buffet is Php2,200.00. The CIHM package, excluding the guided tour, offers all participants round-trip ferry, a full lunch buffet on race day, a genuine dry-fit race shirt, race sling bag, race bib equipped with an RFID timing chip, a classic Finishers’ Medallion, and a ticket to a mercury-rising after-race bash that is the CIHM Victory RaveParty, and a P1000.00 SOLEUS Gift Voucher.

Q: Is the registration fee refundable or transferable?
A: The registration fee is non-refundable. It is also non-transferable.

Q: Is change of race category possible?
A: Yes. Race participants who want to change their initially registered race category to a different category should contact the organizers not later than November 23 for assistance. Beyond this date, request for such will not be accommodated.

Q: Does the registration fee cover accommodations in the island?
A: No. Accommodations, however, range only from P2000 (twin sharing, P750 for add’l person) to P3500 (Resort cabana w/ aircon) per night per room. A standard room could accommodate three persons comfortably. It may be arranged through Sun Cruises at these numbers: 5275555 loc 4511, 0917-5459917, 0917-7948271, 0922-8475418 (Mon to Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-12nn).

Q: Is there any other option for accommodation if I were to go overnight?
A: Yes. CIHM participants may opt to camp out with their own tent. They only have to make a one-time payment of Php250 per tent to Sun Cruises. The camp site is at the parade grounds adjacent to the South Dock and facing the beach. Those who will camp out need not worry about their lavatory needs. Though spartan in nature, there are more than ample clean washroom and restroom cubicles that are very proximate to the tent grounds.

Q: Still concerning those going overnight, where could they avail of their meals?
A: Sun Cruises operates Corregidor Inn where CIHM participants may dine out in a welcoming restaurant. Alternatively, there are several kiosks in the island such as that in McCarthur’s Inn where participants may check out other meal options.

Q: Will CIHM participants camping out be allowed to bring camping stoves?
A: Mini camping stove or similar devices that will produce a relatively minimal combustion may be allowed to be brought in by participants who will camp out.

Q: Are bikes allowed to be brought along?
A: Owing to space limitations in and weight restrictions of the ferries, CIHM participants are disallowed to bring along their bicycles.

Q: Will Corregidor be open to regular tourists on the day of the race?
A: No. The island will be exclusive to CIHM participants on Dec 1. This means that CIHM racers could totally enjoy a traffic-less and urban-nuisance-free race amidst a dramatic backdrop, and that is only in Corregidor.

Q: Where can foreign nationals, residing outside the Philippines, intending to join CIHM get information on Philippine visa requirements?
A: They may check out the tab “Philippine Visa Information for Foreign Participants” in the CIHM website www.corregidor21.runningmate.ph or other veritable websites on the net.

Q: Can registered participants have their own pacers?
A: Yes but only if the pacer is also a registered CIHM participant. The race will strictly adhere to the “No Bib, No Race” policy.

Q: Will there be a sweep time for CIHM participants?
A: None. CIHM participants need not worry about being swept off the race course after a particular time. All participants who will successfully finish the 21k and 10k distances, respectively, will be awarded with the CIHM Finishers’ Medallion and 10K Achiever Medal, correspondingly.

Q: How many hydration stations will there be on the race course?
A: There will be 8 hydration stations, including one at the finish area, at 2km interval from each other.

Q: Will there be first aid stations along the race course?
A: Yes. First aid, actually, will be integrated with the hydration stations. Aside from this, a mobile paramedic team will also be in place.

Q: What is the unique selling point of Corregidor International Half-Marathon?
A: It is the idea that all CIHM participants will have the rare opportunity to run on sacred grounds and all their determined efforts will be cheered on by the glorious memory of heroism of our noble predecessors. Then there’s the bonus of an after-race Victory Rave Party where participants could revel to celebrate their achievement.

NIKE’S WE RUN RACE SERIES RETURNS TO MANILA
We Run MNL 10K inspires and connects runners globally with Nike+

PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 2012 – Nike’s We Run race returns to Manila for a second year, to inspire, motivate and connect runners around the world. On December 2, 2012, Filipino runners will be part of the global We Run race movement, which will see a total of 395,500 runners from 34 cities participating—establishing a new global community of runners through Nike’s most connected race series using the innovative Nike+ technology. The We Run race series kicked off on September 1 in Prague, Czech Republic, and will conclude on December 15 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Nike’s We Run Manila 10K race will energize the streets of Pasay City with the 13,000 high-octane runners expected to make tracks all over the SM Mall of Asia’s grounds. Set against the remarkable view of Manila Bay, the initial stretch of the race will let runners pass through the commercialized area of the Mall of Asia with the SMX Convention Center and the latest icon of the area, the eye-shaped SM Bay City Arena. Runners are set to leave urban commercial scenery and head towards the fields along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. Closing in on the halfway point of the race, runners will then pass the upcoming Belle Casino, a gold complex glistening in the morning sun. As they take a turn on Pacific Avenue and race past the same landmarks, runners will come upon the iconic ferris-wheel along Seaside Boulevard that marks the final kilometer to the finish line. The panoramic run would not be complete without an engaging en route entertainment featuring some of Manila’s top musical acts.

Meeting the runners at the finish line is the Race Village that will offer an array of services. Runners can expect to be pampered with massage booths and get recharged at any of the refreshment stalls while being entertained by the energetic musical line-up.

“Nike’s We Run race is the celebration of running across the world, the culmination of every runner’s dedication and commitment to train harder, defy expectations and push their bodies’ limits. Nike aims to revolutionize the running experience, by allowing runners to inspire, motivate and connect with other runners globally through the Nike+ Technology”, shared Sanjay Gangopadhyay, Marketing Director of Nike South East Asia. “With the second edition of the We Run race in Manila, Nike envisions Filipinos, the youth in particular, to further move the local running scene forward by leading the active lifestyle movement.”

This year, Nike is taking inspiration to a new level as runners will be able to follow two of Philippines most popular lifestyle bloggers, Robbie Becroft of robbieoffduty.com and Lissa Kahayon of lissakahayon.com who will be embarking on their first We Run race. Follow their We Run journey as they take on the challenge of preparing for Nike’s We Run MNL 10K race, blogging at each step of the journey, and witness how Nike elevates their everyday running experience with the various product offerings including the Nike+ ecosystem.

To get race-ready, Nike will organize four training sessions focusing on proper running techniques and tips. Runners will also be able to test out the Nike+ Running app (available on iOS and Android), and try out the season’s latest running products. These clinics will be led by podiatrists and Nike Training Club instructors to further educate individuals on how they can reach their potential as runners.

The registration for Nike’s We Run race will commence on Monday, October 8 2012 online through www.facebook.com/NikeRunningPH and also on-ground at selected retail stores.

Kings of the Road (For a Day)

Whew! 3 weeks, no blog posts! Schedule's been crazy these past few weeks. But since I don't want to miss blogging actual race experiences, it's better late than never.

Last September 30, it was KOTR time again (my 2nd time to run this event). I was hoping for a 21k distance same as last year's but I settled for the longest distance they offered this time - 16.8k. Nursing a bad case of colds for the past few days, I knew I had to take it easy during the run. I had my office mate Rom as my running buddy this time. Plan is a 6 minute per kilometer pace to get a decent finish (That's roughly an hour and forty minutes finish time).

Camera-ready! Rom breaking-in his new NB Minimus.
At the Buendia flyover, we caught up Titan Ryan. And then there were three.

Within the final 5 kilometers, Rom was already doing run-walk intervals. We would lose him for some time, and then he's back again beside us running (which I think eventually burnt him out). The final kilometer, Rom asked us to go ahead. And so three became two. Haha!

Me and Ryan before the final turn to the finish line
We finished 1:45:07; Rom arrived at the finish line a few minutes later. Rom had to cool down a bit in the medical tent as he was on overheat.

Kings of the Road! Happy finishers!
Some race observations:
- Event stage setup was grand! I also like how they setup the race village in the parking lot. (However, it was more difficult to find parking space as they took up the space of runners' usual parking).
- 16.8k gun start was late by 10 minutes.
- Scary incident at KM7 - we witnessed a number of runners assisting a fellow runner who was unconscious and had hit his head (I'm scared of blood so I only took a quick glance). Runners passing by were shouting for medical assistance. I don't know if there were any official statements released from the race organizer regarding the condition of this runner. Hopefully he is ok.
- Hydration was ok, but I remember during the event launch it was announced that Powerade is the official hydration partner. No Powerade during the actual run.
- Queue at the finisher's area was a disaster. It was sooooo long, I actually saw some foreigners looking at the queue in disbelief and just leaving without claiming their loot bag.
- Medal design is very similar to last year.
- Race results were released fast! The day after the event, official results were available for download.

The mandatory post-race breakfast pic - at Conti's Serendra
Hope Adidas changes the theme next year, and offers something new to the runners.
